Women are being gang-raped by Ethiopian rebels, according to report

Amnesty International has accused rebel fighters from the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front of gang-raping women in conflict-torn eastern Ethiopia in a new report released on Thursday. The BBC reports that the militants raped women and girls as young as 12, and that they were sometimes commanded to strike women who resisted. “Rather than be respected as a leader on the front, women and girls were regarded as nothing more than sex objects,” the report stated. The rape of women by rebels was documented in eight locations in Ethiopia’s Tigray region. The report noted that the number of reported rapes by the rebels did not represent a substantial number of the rapes committed by the Ethiopian army. Thousands of people were killed during the clashes between the rebels and government troops, which took place between 2008 and 2014. The report came days after former Vice President Joseph Biden visited the region, where he called the rebels “corrupt.”
