While many young players have served as team leaders as rookies, Leona Maguire stands as the lone rookie that has emerged as a leader in addition to being the star of the tour. The 26-year-old from Northern Ireland has led the Solheim Cup team by example since the competition’s inception as a women’s version of the Ryder Cup.

During a tournament earlier this summer, she was named European Solheim Cup Player of the Match, and won 11 of 12 holes. She was also twice a member of the team as vice captain.

For now, the regular career is still being defined, especially since she recently had her best finish (fifth) on the LPGA Tour and showed her versatility as a player by hitting in seven of nine in a golf tournament — without ever being in contention for a medal.

At that point she was asked about her personal plans moving forward.

“Next year is not too far away, so we’ll see where my schedule takes me,” she said. “I would love to go down to the Solheim Cup next year, of course. That would be a great experience to experience and to get a start under my belt.”
